Welcome to the Disabled Archery Section

Welcome to that part of the GNAS team which concerns itself with issues affecting those archers, and would-be archers, with any kind of impairment – whether it be physical, sensorial or neurological.

The Team

Chris Christopherson - Chairman of the committee. Chris has been an archer since 1985 and was for sometime a member of the GB disabled squad and has competed at a number of international events. He gave up archery for 3 years to return to his 1st  love of motorcycle racing. After 2 rather exciting incidents at Brands Hatch in  2003 he decided that archery is actually a lot less painfull and has now returned to the fold.
• Ray Fields – Ray has worked as a coach for archers with disabilities for over 25 years. Following a spinal injury in 2003 he is now paraplegic. He has been assistant manager and manager to the Great Britain Squad and is currently manager of the Development Squad.
• Harry Healey – Harry is a coach with extensive experience of working with visually impaired archers.
• David Poyner – David is a visually impaired archer and member of the very successful GB Squad competing recently in Italy. David works with the development team at St. Dunstans.
• John Cavanagh – John is the athletes’ representative on the committee. His involvement ensures that the views and concerns of the archers are properly considered.
• Helen George – Helen is a GNAS Senior Coach. She has been co-opted on to the Committee and makes a major contribution to the work of the Development Squad.

Our Mission

To advise the Society, through the Operations Director, on appropriate action to be taken in respect of national legislation, disability sport regulation and issues raised by individual members and clubs within the Society.

To recommend appropriate individuals for selection and development in the Squad structure.

To identify new initiatives to encourage active integration within archery.

What's in it for You?

If you are someone thinking of ‘having a go’ at archery, you are likely to have some questions like - Where do I start? With my disability, is it safe to do? Etc. Whatever your query, we will do our best to help you find an answer. Archery has always been in the forefront of integration between able-bodied and disabled participants. We share the same shooting line, tolerate the same weather and compete for the same trophies -  and frequently win them!! We have a paralympic squad to be proud of and to aspire to. The club structure of the GNAS ensures that there will be a level of activity to suit your needs and provide you with enjoyable recreation or challenging competition.

If you are an established archer with some sort of disability, we would still like to hear from you. We want to build up a comprehensive database of the number of archers and the range of disabilities involved. If you are starting to get 1000 + FITA scores, then we would certainly like to hear about it!

So if you have a query, or some news to pass on - Please get in touch through the contact us option.
