Welcome to the Disabled Archery Section

Welcome to that part of the Archery GB  team which concerns itself with issues affecting those archers, and would-be archers, with any kind of impairment – whether it be physical, sensorial or neurological.

The Team

Chris Christopherson - Chairman of the committee.  Chris has been an archer since 1985 and was for sometime a member of the GB Disabled Squad and has competed at a number of international events.

He gave up archery for three years to return to his first  love of motorcycle racing.   After two  rather exciting incidents at Brands Hatch in  2003 he decided that archery is actually a lot less painfull and has now returned to the fold.

Ray Fields – Ray has worked as a coach for archers with disabilities for over twenty five years. Following a spinal injury in 2003 he is now paraplegic.   He has been assistant manager and manager to the Great Britain Squad and is currently manager of the Development Squad.

Harry Healey – Harry is a coach with extensive experience of working with visually impaired archers.

David Poyner – David is a visually impaired archer and member of the very successful GB Squad competing recently in Italy. David works with the development team at St. Dunstans.

John Cavanagh – John is the athletes’ representative on the committee.  His involvement ensures that the views and concerns of the archers are properly considered.

Helen George – Helen is an Archery GB/GNAS Senior Coach.  She has been co-opted on to the Committee and makes a major contribution to the work of the Development Squad.

Our Mission

To advise the Society, through the Operations Director, on appropriate action to be taken in respect of national legislation, disability sport regulation and issues raised by individual members and clubs within the Society.

To recommend appropriate individuals for selection and development in the Squad structure.

To identify new initiatives to encourage active integration within archery.

What's in it for You?

If you are someone thinking of ‘having a go’ at archery, you are likely to have some questions like - Where do I start? With my disability, is it safe to do? Etc.

Whatever your query, we will do our best to help you find an answer. Archery has always been in the forefront of integration between able-bodied and disabled participants. We share the same shooting line, tolerate the same weather and compete for the same trophies -  and frequently win them!!  We have a paralympic squad to be proud of and to aspire to.  The club structure of the Archery GB  ensures that there will be a level of activity to suit your needs and provide you with enjoyable recreation or challenging competition.

If you are an established archer with some sort of disability, we would still like to hear from you. We want to build up a comprehensive database of the number of archers and the range of disabilities involved. If you are starting to get 1000 + FITA scores, then we would certainly like to hear about it!

So if you have a query, or some news to pass on - please get in touch through the contact us option.

Report on National Championship 2008

GNAS/DSE National Archery Championships

May 17th 18th  2008

Sparrow Hall Farm , Eddlesborough, Beds

The day started very dull, cold, windy and some showers but with the prospect of the largest number of competitors who have ever attended these championships we looked forward to a good competition. In the past this event has been held as a FITA over 2 days with the shorter distances and the Burntwood round taking place on day 2. this year we have changed the format to include all competitors on day 1, with a FITA 720 and an Olympic round on the Sunday. This new format worked very well and allowed newcomers to the event to see the longer distances and to give a feeling of being included in the whole event.

In spite of the weather a number of personal best scores were achieved and even a 6 gold end for one happy recurve archer. A number of the competitors were competing for the first time and were able to achieve scores which allowed them to win medals.

On day 2, (cloudy, cold and gusting wind) we held the 720 and Olympic rounds and the ultimate winner Pippa Britton (compound) achieved a PB for the round and a PB for the final of the Head to Head. Paul Browne hit a good streak of form at this H2H was pleased to be the winner when competing against other squad members.

We have to thank BOOST  and UK Sport for the help and sponsorship we have received this year and for the help and use of the shooting ground from “The Archery warehouse” and the provision of helpers throughout the day. Our intention was to provide a good event for the archers who attended and to raise the profile of disabled archery for the benefit of all of our disabled archers so that we can look forward to an even better and bigger National Championships in years to come.

In 2009 the event will be held sometime in June. (this date to be settled as soon as possible so that we do not clash with any other major event ) We also intend to invite some teams from our nearest European neighbours, eg, France, Holland and Belgium and to include the National Champs as part of the  “GB Archery” calender of events from here on.
